DRIVER CPC - THE FACTS

GRANDFATHER RIGHTS

Drivers who gained their car license (cat B) prior to 1 January 1997 were automatically awarded C1 entitlement and do not have to complete modules 2 or 4, you are given full Driver CPC status through grandfather rights (acquired rights), but will still be required to complete periodic training.
 
If you want to drive goods vehicles over 3500kgs, an LGV license will enable successful candidates to drive any rigid vehicle
  • To qualify for this you must hold a full car license
  • You must be medically fit
  • You must be 18 years old or older
 
PREREQUISITES

  • Medical D4 Form
  • Completed by Doctor before sending for provisional
  • This can be arranged by JMT

  • Provisional License with category C1, C, D1 or D entitlement
  • C1 - Medium-sized vehicles
    C - Large vehicles and lorries
    D1 - Minibus
    D - Bus entitlement
    JMT can assist in completing this form and deal with DVSA processing
 
MULTIPLE CHOICE AND HAZARD PERCEPTION THEORY TESTS
  • JMT can supply theory test study material
  • JMT can arrange booking the tests at the nearest Test Center
 
All necessary arrangements including: medical appointments, completion of application forms and theory tests can be handled by JMT LGV Training admin Staff.
One set of training every 5 years if you drive a lorry as the main part of your job
You have to do the training in the country where you work or are normally resident.
You only need to complete one set of training every 5 years if you drive a lorry, bus or coach as the main part of your job.
 
HOW TO GET AND KEEP THE FULL DRIVER CPC
  • Pass the 4 tests that make up Driver CPC to qualify
  • Take 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to stay qualified
  • Sign a declaration every 5 years until you’re 45 to show you still meet the medical standards
  • Provide a medical report every 5 years after you’re 45 to renew your driving licence  - you need to do this every year when you reach 65
 
WHEN TO TAKE DRIVER CPC PERIODIC TRAINING
Each 5-year period starts from 5 years before your current Driver CPC qualification runs out - not from the date you completed your last 35 hours of training.

DEADLINE FOR NEW PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS
You must complete periodic training by 5 years from the date you got the initial qualification.
 
DEADLINE FOR DRIVERS WHO HAD OR HAVE ACQUIRED RIGHTS
 
LORRY DRIVER
  • First block of training - 9 September 2014
  • Second block of training - 9 September 2019
  • Third block of training - 9 September 2024

BUS OR COACH DRIVER
  • First block of training - 9 September 2013
  • Second block of training - 9 September 2018
  • Third block of training - 9 September 2023
 
DUAL CATEGORY (LORRY, BUS AND COACH DRIVER)
  • First block of training - 9 September 2013
  • Second block of training - 9 September 2019*
  • Third block of training - 9 September 2024
* Dual-category drivers will have 6 years to do their second block of training, rather than the usual 5 years.
 
After the deadline has passed, you can’t drive professionally until you have completed 35 hours of periodic training. You can do more than 35 hours, but you can’t carry the extra hours over for the next block of training.
 
ID YOU NEED TO TAKE TO TRAINING
You must take one of the following to your training: 
  • a photocard driving licence
  • a valid passport
  • a digital tachograph card
  • a driver qualification card (DQC)
 
YOU DON'T NEED THE FULL DRIVER CPC IF
  • You don’t want to drive for a living, eg you want to drive for a hobby or carry passengers or goods non-commercially for personal use
  • You drive in other certain situations, eg taking your vehicle for a pre-booked annual test (MOT) You still need to pass the part 1 (theory) and part 3 (driving ability) tests of the qualification.
