Make sure you're road legal with B+E licence courses

Do you know how much you can legally tow? If you passed your test from 1 January 1997 onwards, your driving licence will be limited to a Category B licence.

If you have a Category B licence, you can legally drive a vehicle with a maximum mass of 3500kg plus a trailer weighing 750kg. You can tow a heavier trailer as long as the combined maximum allowable weights of the towing vehicle and trailer do not exceed 3500kg.

If you want to tow anything heavier, you'll need a Category B+E licence. That's where we come in!

What to expect from the B+E test

  • "Show / tell me" questions, just like your driving test
  • Reversing exercise
  • Coupling and re-coupling the trailer exercise
  • An hour-long drive with a DVSA Driving Examiner

Two-day course

Ideal for someone who has experience at towing and reversing
  • General driving skills assessed and improved in readiness for the test
  • Test held on the second day after further training session.

Three-day course

Ideal for someone with little or no trailer experience
  • General driving skills assessed and improved in readiness for the test
  • Test held on the third day after further training session.

What driving licence do I need to tow a caravan or trailer?

If you have a Category B licence and passed your test prior to 1 January 1997 you can drive:

Towed outfits: any outfit where the combined Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) does not exceed 8,250kg (over this weight would have required an additional test pre-1997). However, our recommended weight ratio between trailer and towing vehicle is 85%.
If you have a Category B licence and passed your test on or after 1 January 1997 you can drive:

Towed outfits: you’re restricted to a combined MAM of 3,500kg and the trailer MAM must not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle (85% ratio remains strongly recommended). If this MAM is to be exceeded, an additional E Test pass is required.
